Education in Colombia Education is an umbrella term that brings about an inherent and permanent change in a person's thinking and capacity to do things, it is the process of facilitating learning, acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs and habits.  Colombia has an eleven-year system of elementary and secondary education, consisting of five years of elementary education, four years of lower secondary education and two years of upper secondary education. Unfortunately, as for me, education in Colombia is really bad and it has been shown in the results of different national and international tests. I have always wondered the reason why it is like that. Are we Colombians silly? or what is the real reason behind this mess. According to my experience in the academy, I have made a list of reasons why I think Education in Colombia is as bad as I mentioned before. I noticed that education is unfair and unequal, I also blame teachers, the government because of the very l...

Fake news: improved critical literacy skills are key to telling fact from fiction.

Nowadays it is very common to use the internet to look for information or a topic. It is also well known that internet has a lot of sources full of information that may be give an answer to our questions, but... how do we know if that information in valid? how can we encorage students to investigate deeper and not to conform and trust on the fist thing they found or they heard? In a country as Colombia it is very difficult to try to ban this problem; students are very lazy, most of them do not like reading, they do not like to investigate. As for me, schools should implement more classes for reading compehension, the should try to look for strategies so as to make learners feel love o at least like for reading, shools should encourage students to be informed about different topics, in this way they could develop a critical perspective and also they would give different responses, the could be able to participate on debates, using their knowledge to persuade and defend their points of ...

STEREOTYPES

Stereotypes: When we think of stereotypes we think of the different concepts or ideas that people abroad have about our country and culture. Most of the time those are negative, but some of them are possitive. A very common example is the idea that foreign people have of latin people; they think that we are lazy people... I think that it is true, but what they do not have into account is that if we were as lazy as they think we would not have a house for living, money for eating, paying public services, transportation and so on. For all those things that I have mentioned money is necessary and the only way for getting it is working and working hard for getting a misery salary. On the other hand, foreign people also think that we are happy people, that's true and as for me it is nice to be known as warm, easy going people.

The lecture of Stephen Brookfield on Creative and Creative Thinking...

Stephen Brookfield describes  critical thinking as the way we think and take decisions in our lives. Our actions and assumptions, the attemps for identifying and acurate and valid solution; he says that critical thinking foccus on undertanding. On the other hand creative thinking means being able to see things from different perspectives, on multiple ways, it is also being able to communicate and for elaborate multiple responses. He clasified assumptions on three categories: Causal, prescriptive, and paradigmatic.

CRITICAL AND CREATIVE THINKING...

Reflection 1. Emotional self- management. For me, the emotions that are most difficult to manage when others disagree with me are: * Anger.😠 * Frustation. I deal with these by taking a deep breath and trying to convince to others that I'm right :) Reflection 2. Influences on my thinking. For me,  the influences on my own thinking that I need to be most aware of so they don't prejudice my thinking are that most of the time I am a prepotent and selfish person. I deal with this by listening to others first and trying to take into account their opinions. Reflection 3. Challenging opinions. For me, the things I find most difficult about challenging the opinions of others are desinformation or the lack of interest on their opinions. I deal with these by looking for information so as to stablish an agreement or desagreement and also providing my own opinion in that regard, and when I don't find interesting their opinions I just ignore them. Reflection 4 .  ...
